Things went catastrophically wrong. It was a real fiasco. We tried to {compensate|handle the situation, but it was like trying to stop a tsunami with a cocktail stick. We're still picking up the pieces and feeling the sting of this epic fail.

This issue has spiraled out of control. It's a total catastrophe. We've tried anything to fix it, but nothing seems to be effective. At this point, it feels like we're hopelessly stuck. Frankly, I don't know what else to do. This is a train wreck of epic proportions.
This is So Bad, It's Funny (Not Really)
Sometimes you find yourself face-to-face with situations so terrible that you can't help but laugh. It's like your brain tries to make sense of the sheer level of destruction and just throws its hands up, opting for laughter as a coping strategy.
But then, you remember that it's not really funny. It's just plain bad. And the laughter you felt morphs into a groan.
Ultimately, you are left with a sense of utter perplexity. You wonder about the meaning of it all. Was Very bad this a joke?
Or were we just all part of a grand, cosmic prank?
Catastrophe of Epic Proportions
The volcanic eruption struck without warning, consuming entire towns in its path. Buildings collapsed like fragile toys, and the roar that followed was deafening. Thousands were left beneath rubble, their fate unknown. The magnitude of the disaster was unprecedented, leaving survivors to face a future forever altered.
Rescue efforts sprang into action, battling against time and hazardous conditions to locate those still missing. The nations watched in horror as the full extent of the disaster revealed itself, offering support to the afflicted population.
Dreadful Day Ever
It all started with a terrible case of morning hair. I couldn't make it to look presentable. As I was dashing out the door, I stumbled and dropped my lunch all over the floor. To make matters worse, I was extremely running behind for work.
I in a state of utter panic. My {boss|friend|was absolutely furious. I tried to explain, but it was a hopeless situation.
The rest of the day was just as bad. Everything. I couldn'tfocus.
By the time I got home, I was utterly defeated. This day, this horrific day will be forever remembered as the worst day ever.

It all started out badly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then everything went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to run away and hide.
